Abstract

CLAUD-IT supports EU Member States with the implementation of clinical audit and thereby contribute to improved quality and safety for Europe’s patients. The project will pilot audit campaigns in radiology and nuclear medicine in 9 EU member states in order to foster implementation into clinical routine. Based on a needs assessment and consideration of recent initiatives and infrastructure, CLAUD-IT will for the first time develop clinical audit guidance for nuclear medicine and expand existing guidance for radiology, both based on the European Society of Radiology’s ESPERANTO guide to clinical audit.

The 36-month project will connect hospitals, national professional societies and authorities of 9 countries, and is fully supported by the relevant European scientific societies. Practical implementation will be performed in a staged approach following the CLAUD-IT methodology and “clinical audit cookbook” training material. In a first step, clinical audits will be conducted in 11 core hospitals in 9 EU Member States by local multidisciplinary teams under external guidance. In a second step, audits will be rolled-out in additional 3-6 institutions in each of the 9 countries, considering lessons learned in the 1st round. This way over 250 professionals will be trained in clinical audit, following the train-the-trainer concept to build further capacity and to ensure trained auditors act as multipliers.

CLAUD-IT: Objectives

(1) Assess the current state of the art in all 9 participating Member States to identify new developments since the completion of the QuADRANT project as well as existing infrastructures and stakeholders.

(2) Prepare practical, concise and evidence-based audit material and related training material for radiology and nuclear medicine and to make these available in a central repository in order to provide a “one-stop-shop” for stakeholders.

(3) Hold practical stakeholder training to conduct clinical audits under external guidance.

(4) Raise awareness for the importance of clinical audit by communicating its mandatory character as laid down in the BSSD and explaining the great impact it can have on daily professional practice as well as its contribution to higher quality care and patient safety. Convene the stakeholders in an effort to develop clinical audit strategies and campaigns.
