Planned medical treatment

DSC_5427.jpgWe provide planned medical treatment and unforeseen medical treatment to foreign patients. You can decide about the planned medical treatment in advance and obtain all necessary information from UMCL, The Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia (i.e. Zavod za zdravstveno zavarovanje Slovenije), your insurance institution and from legal provisions of the country where you have your health insurance.

Provisions for Member States of the European Economic Area (EEA) are covered by Regulation (EC) 883/2004 and Directive 2011/24/EU on the application of patients' rights in cross-border health care and they both apply to UMCL.

Cover the costs

You wish to receive treatment in Slovenia at UMC Ljubljana and you want to know if the costs will be met by your health insurance company. To find out whether you meet the conditions, you need to consider the following questions:

  1. Is this planned or unforeseen treatment?
If for example you are on holidays in Slovenia and a member of your family needs a treatment, it is covered by the European Health Insurance Card.
  2. In which country do you have health insurance?
The rules explained here apply if you are covered by a statutory social security scheme in a member State of the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.
  3. Is this treatment covered by the legislation of the state where you have your health insurance?
Your treatment costs will be covered only if the law in the country where you are insured recognises the treatment. Find out from your insurance institution before you travel.
  4. Is it a hospital treatment?
In the case of hospital treatment, your health insurance institution will almost always require you to seek authorisation. The cost will then be covered under the terms of UCML and The Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia. If those terms are less favourable than the terms offered by your own health insurance, the difference will be refunded to you. If you have not received authorisation, then your treatment costs will not automatically be covered. You can still claim reimbursement on your return, but there are no guarantees that your claim will be accepted.

If you fulfil these conditions and if you want to obtain more information, please contact your health insurance institution. Our hospital provides various health care services to foreign patients. Check your medical conditions with the appropriate contacts and ask for quotations.
