Department of Child, Adolescent and Developmental Neurology
The Department has been established in 1954 as a speciality department for children with neurological diseases at the Children's Hospital of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana. In 1999 the Department has been enlarged with the Centre for Epilepsy and the Centre for Developmental Neurology and became a Clinical Department of Child, Adolescent and Developmental Neurology.
It is a tertiary care centre for all neurological conditions (including developmental problems) for the whole paediatric population of Slovenia. The Department comprises 21 inpatient beds (around 3000 hospital days/year) and the outpatient clinics (6500 visits/year). It also includes the Unit for Neurophysiology (video-EEG, telemetry, ambulatory-EEG, diagnostics of cardiorespiratory functions, evoked potentials, EMG), Unit for Developmental Psychology and Neuropsychology, and Centre for Epilepsy.
There are 53 staff members, of which 8 have PhD degrees (1 full professor, 2 associate professors and 1 assistant professor). Two members are regular (part-time) employees of the University of Ljubljana, Medical Faculty and 5 are associated members. The Department is also accredited for Curriculum in Child Neurology (postgraduate study of 3.5 years duration) and has a joint PhD programme in Neurosciences at Universities of Ljubljana and Zagreb (Croatia) through the Centre for Developmental Neurosciences at the Medical faculty Ljubljana. The department is part of the European reference networks for rare neurological diseases and neuromuscular diseases (ERN-RND and ERN-NMD). The Department is also responsible for the Slovenian Register of Cerebral Palsy, which is member of the European SCPE.
