Department of Abdominal Surgery

Our team of highly experienced surgeons and nurses takes care of the patients before, during and after surgeries. We work hand in hand with specialists in other disciplines such as anaesthesiologists, radiologists, gastroenterologists, physiatrists and others. We offer patients the highest standards of surgical treatment. At the Department for abdominal Surgery, patients with benign and malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are treated:

• inguinal, postoperative and abdominal hernias,
• gallstones,
• chronic inflammatory bowel diseases,
• stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder / bile duct, small intestine, colon and rectum tumours,
• proctologic diseases,
• excessive obesity.

We have more than 15 years’ experience in performing liver and pancreatic transplants. In our Department of Paediatric Surgery, we treat congenital abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract in children. In addition, we deal with all types of acute abdominal disorders (acute inflammation of the gallbladder, colon, penetration of the hollow organ, inflammation of the pancreas, ileus ...).

Many specialists participate in the treatment of numerous diseases. For each individual patient we will find the best treatment option. In order to achieve this, we hold regular consultations: surgical-internist consultation, oncological-surgical consultation, liver tumours’ consultation, liver transplant consultation, pancreatic transplantation consultation, neuroendocrine tumour consultation, chronic inflammatory bowel disease consultation and paediatric surgical radiology consultation.

We are aware that waiting for the planned surgery procedure is stressful, both for the patient and for the relatives. In accordance with modern, accelerated recovery after surgery, we perform laparoscopic procedures. In the past few years, we made special efforts in this area of abdominal surgery and the spectrum of laparoscopic surgeries today covers all abdominal organs.

In addition to development of our advanced surgical procedures, our goal is to educate the new generations of abdominal surgeons. High quality of patient care begins with the education and training of medical students, specialists of surgery, nursing students, and other specialties. We are committed to this endeavours as we take pride in our status of the Surgical Clinic, member of the Medical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana. We regularly organize professional meetings from individual areas of abdominal surgery.

Medical research is important for each and every member of our clinic. It pushes forward the boundaries in medicine and enhances the results of the treatment, which are reflected in the faster recovery after surgery and the longer survival in cancer patients. Research cooperation includes some of the most important surgical clinics worldwide.
