The Transplantation Centre provides support to the organization and logistics in organ tissue and cell transplantation activity in UMCL.
UMCL is the sole medical institution providing organ transplant procedures in Slovenia.
We have been performing kidney transplantation from living related and deceased donors since 1970, heart and pancreas since 1990, liver since 1995 and lung since 2003. The lung transplantation program is carried out in cooperation with AKH Wien in Austria. By the end of the educational process of our lung transplant team in 2019, we will have successively performed the complete Lung Transplantation Program in UMCL.
We have been ranked first worldwide in terms of the number of heart transplants per million population (12-16 htx/ppm) for six years in a row since 2013.
Annually, 110 to 120 organs – kidneys, hearts, livers and pancreas – are transplanted in UMCL.
An extremely important and well developed cell and tissue transplantation program is performed at 15 different clinics and clinical departments at UMCL where bone marrow, corneal, stem cells, and IVF/ICSI transplantation stand out in terms of the size of their activities.
The Transplantation Centre also cooperates in the organization and education of donor management specialists.
Our long-term goal is to provide more opportunities for all transplant candidates and we are actively looking into bilateral transplantation teaching and training agreements.
